PRICING

You’ve scoured the internet for a proofreader and copyeditor who will look at your work with inexhaustible energy and meticulous focus, but there are so many to choose from, aren’t there?

On top of that, there are so many different prices being quoted, how are you expected to decide which price is the right one for you?

“We don't get paid for the hour, we get paid for the value that we bring to the hour.”

Jim Rohn

What's the cost for Sage Proofreading &
Copyediting Services?

The services that I offer vary greatly depending on what you need. So, all of the quotes that I supply my customers are bespoke and tailored for their specific work and request.

But to give you an idea, CIEP (Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading) suggest the following minimum hourly rates, and I use this guide to create your tailored quote:

  • Proofreading

  • Copyediting

  • Substantial editing, rewriting and development editing

As a member of CIEP, and a qualified proofreader and copyeditor, my quote will be based on these suggested rates which reflect my professionalism and the professional work that I will do for you.

So, how many words can I proofread per hour?

If I am working with a client and I am accustomed to their work, I will proofread approximately 3,000 words per hour. This is because I am already familiar with their style guide and the author’s voice.

If I am proofreading a piece of work for a new client, it may take an hour to proofread 1,000 words. This is because I need to familiarise myself with the style guide and the format of the writing.

So, how many words can I copyedit per hour?

It really isn’t easy to estimate how many words can be copyedited in an hour…there are so many variables. It depends on the client and the project, and on:

  • which copyediting option you choose.

  • the condition of your manuscript.

  • the complexity of the text.

  • whether you have done any previous checks beforehand.

How do you get a clearer idea of the price you’ll pay?

Before providing a quote for the service, there is some information that I need from you.

  • Details about your work such as

    • what type of writing is it (e.g. a dissertation, an article, a draft for a fiction or non-fiction book)?

    • what is the word count?

    • who is your target reader and what is the purpose of your writing?

    • will your writing be read by people who may not be fluent in English (e.g. you may want me to copyedit for language that they might not understand such as puns, idioms, similes.)?

    • does it include images and captions that need to be edited and checked for copyright issues?

  • what type of service you think your work needs i.e. proofreading or one of the copyediting options.

  • when you’d like to send your work to me, and when you’d like it back.

It is important for me to see a sample of your work so that I can provide you with a more precise quote. Confidentiality is extremely important to me, and your work will not be shared, distributed or disclosed to anyone and your file will be held securely. The quote that I provide for you is valid for 30 days, or earlier if requested. If you don’t use my services, the sample of your work will be deleted from my files at this point.

If you would prefer not to provide me with a sample of your work, I can only give you a rough estimate of what the cost will be.
